We had a quick breakfast at the trailer so we could get a jump on the day. Stopped off in Port Angeles to inquire about ferry service to Victoria on Vancouver Island across the Juan De Fuca Strait.
With a plan to catch the ferry across tomorrow at 8:30 we headed out of town towards our hike for the day. About 45 minutes from town and deep in the park down a one lane dirt road we came to the trail head for Whiskey Bend. The trail would take us on a loop through some gorgeous forest, by two old homesteads and to the granite Goblin Gate along the river.

We heard some really strange animal calls while we were on the path. I called back and whatever was out there answered back. Whoa creepy. It was enough to make the hair stand up on my arms. When we looked down and saw a few deer in a little clearing unphased we figured we were safe. Despite having to do a little bushwhacking when the trail vanished the hike was a blast and we had the place to ourselves. Check out the video below.

We headed further west in the park to check out Crescent Lake. On the way we stopped off at Grandma’s Café. We had some good grub there and enjoyed checking our the menagerie of animals out back. Pigeons, goats, horses, chickens and dogs called this little pit stop home. It had a very pioneer feel and I could imagine some family setting up a homestead here generations ago.
Crescent Lake was a gorgeous lake with steep green mountains climbing up from the placid waters. After a spin around the lake we raced back to town to get some packages off to our moms for Mother’s Day.
We continued on past our RV Park for a couple miles until we came to the turn off for the Dungeness Nature Preserve. We took a nice hike in this beachside forest. There were some great views of the strait and we could see across to Vancouver Island. We hiked out onto the spit and played around on the huge driftwood on shore. We didn’t hike much further as the large stones that made up the beach made that pretty difficult.

It was a good way to close off our US adventures for now and we were ready to head to Canada. Back at the trailer we I cooked up some Steak and Asparagus and then we settled into watch an episode of the Bachelor. Oh the drama. LOL!

Hi!
I just took the Goblin’s Gate/Elwah River hike with a friend of mine last week. I am really bad about forgetting my camera, so I didn’t have any pics to show my husband when I got back. Your pics and video took me on a tour of what I did, so I could show it off anyway.
Thanks!
Chris
So cool that you were able to take this fantastic trip. I’ve always wanted to take a huge block of time out and just travel the country …and Canada too. I had a friend who bicycled coast to coast in Canada a few years back. I was soooo jealous.
Anyway I’m a big national parks fan, but mostly have to hit them 1 week or weekend at a time. I haven’t hit Olympic yet but hope to get to the northwest to catch a few parks next year. Your pics made me want to move that trip up my list.
Thanks for your input and sharing your trip.
Josh
