Day 36 - Solvang, CA - Pismo Beach - San Louis Obispo

Day 36

We woke this morning to the tantalizing scent of a hot breakfast being prepared downstairs. Now this is the way you host guests. We took some serious notes on this one.

Amazing French toast, bacon, excellent coffee = HEAVEN

We wished the Fields goodbye and sent them off to work. We stayed in the house to wait for Brian’s brother Michael to come over. We had scheduled to sit down and film a chat with Michael about his current film project Voice of a Mountain.

After closing up the house we hopped in the Fox and pulled Kodi north again. The Fields had suggested a detour from Hwy 1 up to the intriguing town of Solvang. Like something straight out of Denmark this little village came replete with windmills, meatballs and wooden shoes. Check out the video of this hidden gem.

We had some lunch in Solvang and walked around the quaint streets for about an hour. There were a lot of tourists on bikes and the city was humming with activity. On a beautiful cloudless day like this one can understand why.

Just a short distance up the road, on route back to Hwy 1, we stopped off at Blackjack’s Winery. This was our first wine tasting on the trip and we were excited to taste some of California’s finest. The recent movie Sideways which centered around a duo of wine lovers touring the area had cameo of this unique winery.

The wine was delicious but we did feel a bit out of place. We certainly didn’t taste all the crazy things the descriptions on the wine list pointed out. I mean what the heck is ‘graphite’ doing as a wine descriptor. Unreal….now fruity, dry, cherry, currant these are things I can taste.

It was still a nice stop. We continued on from here through Los Olivos and on up the coast to our stopping point for the day Pismo Beach. The park here was slammed, absolutely chock full of Spring Breaking families. It was a bit overwhelming once you added in the families, dogs and the rumbling train screaming by 20 feet from the trailer.

To take a break we drove to the town so I could get a haircut. With my new hairdo we decided to drive up to the quaint town of San Luis Obispo. It was a really cool place. Lots of cool shops and restaurants open to the street. We parked and strolled around. Kam took a spin through a few stores and I went wandering for a place for us to dine.

I found a really great Thai restaurant with excellent décor and what turned out to be delicious fare. So we rendezvoused at the Thai Palace and sat at the bar since the wait would have been much longer if we wanted a proper table. It actually turned out nicely since we had a view of the dinning area and got great service from the bartender. Our dishes were excellent and I was sweating from the chili past in mine within minutes.

We returned home to one of the worst nights sleep to date. With car alarms going off every 15 minutes, dogs barking and kids playing well past midnight it made falling asleep really difficult. Oh yeah did I mention the train. Yeah there is a train 20 feet from the rv. LOL
